So you may be asking yourself, what is Shinee? Shinee is a Korean Pop group who is one of my favorites in the genre singed under SM Entertainment. The group is made up of members, Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho, and Taemin. K-pop is a genre of music where the artists are generally comprised of boy band and girl bands fabricated my a music company. In many cases, the members have trained since their early teenage years in order to have a chance to be in a group at a later time. For some it takes 7 years of training, for others it takes a few years. They eat, sleep and dream k-pop. I imagine it to be like the movie and Tv show “Fame”, the one from the 80’s. Well, that mixed in with a little bit, no “a lot a bit” of Lou Pearlman behind the scenes drama.
What I love about K-pop groups is that they give almost flawless performances most of the time. They have trained so hard and so long that they group members cannot help but be in sync. I just caught that, no pun intended. What i hate about K-pop is that I can feel a lack of creativity by the group members, by no fault of their own. It is just that creativity that brought forth the Michael Jackson we knew and the Justin Timberlakes of today. I feel K-pop often overshadows other awesome artists of Korean, whether it be from the, Alternative, R&B, Classical, or even Hip-Hop genres. There is an awesome Korean Rap artist known as Tiger Jk who has a nice flow. Also, Jung Yeop is an R&B artists who is known for his single “Nothing Better.” I really love his song ” Thorn Flower” from the Napun Namja (나쁜남자-Bady Guy) soundtrack . These are two artists you do not need to translate to enjoy and groove to. I will write about them at a later date , but for now will leave some videos end of this article.
With that all said, Shinee is one of my favorite K-pop and when I saw a cover of their “Sherlock” routine today, I wanted to share it. Its an old song from about two years back. The dance routines to this song was choreographed by Tony Testa, who worked with both Michael and Janet Jackson. You get a Jackson feel as you watch the group practice. My favorite parts are the when one guy dances and the other guys kinda shadow and ‘freeze frames’ his moves. In the video below, you see Shinee lip-syncing because this is, of course, a dance practice. I think there is a toilet paper roll and cup out front, which represent stage boundaries during the practice.
